While researching sociopaths I came across a Nigerian scam artist, Olayinka Ilumsa Sunmola, who specialized in romancing women over the internet to send him money. He would pose as man looking for love (aka catfishing) on social media and internet dating sites. Convincing them he was a American soldier stationed overseas. He played upon each woman’s romantic feelings and vulnerabilities, manipulating them into wiring him money or shipping him laptop computers, tablets, and cell phones – equipment he told them he needed to complete his government mission. He was so committed to his crimes that he created written scripts of emails to use. Details would include what to say and when to send these emails as the relationship developed.
The good news is that his efforts eventually got him sentenced to 27 years in prison for mail fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy, and interstate extortion.
The humble lesson that can be learned from this is that anyone can be conned or mind controlled if given enough time be a well trained (and unethical) operator.
